(Phnom Penh): Royal Embassy of Cambodia to the United States issued a press release on on Jan. 17 to express its dismay and shock after learning that such items as “Angkor Wat” toilet cover sets are available on US’s largest shopping site Amazon.
The press release reads as follows:
The Royal Embassy of Cambodia to the United States has learned with shock and dismay that:
– The silhouettes or/and the photos of the Angkor Temples, including Angkor Wat, Ta Prohm, Bayon, Beng Melea that have been inscribed on the World Heritage List since 1992 and benefitted from Reinforced International Protection (UNESCO) since 2017, have been used by the manufacturers as images of some ignominious products, among them toilet seat cover, bath area rug, contour mat, toilet seat lid, shower curtains, kitchen carpet.
– Moreover, the manufacturers went all the outrageous wat to use the Flag of the Kingdom of Cambodia as design of bathroom mat set (carpets and toilet seat lid).
– All the referred goods have been put in sale by AMAZON on amazon.com and amazon.fr.
The Kingdom of Cambodia condemns the manufacturers of these products and urges AMAZON to immediately stop their sale by removing its websites all these goods, which seriously affect the National Honor and Prestige of the Kingdom of Cambodia.
The Royal Embassy has registered on January 16, 2018 with AMAZON’s customer services the Embassy’s protest and the above-mentioned urge. Ambassador CHUM Sounry has sent a letter dated January17, 2019 to the attention of the Chairman, CEO and President of AMAZON with the same meaning.
The Director General of APSARA National Authority has also sent to the Company a letter protesting the sale of these products on AMAZON’s websites and stressed that “It is not necessary insist on the ignoble character of this use and that the dissemination of these ignominious products must be stopped quickly.” (SN- Lok Samret)
